The brief

The Alpine Club of Canada consists of several branches across the country, all synced up to a central membership system. Event leaders can create events and approve members that want to join in the fun! Our task was to integrate this process with the membership backend, while at the same time improving the event finder and creating an online community for members to discuss their adventures.

A powerful, elegant events calendar

User research told our designers to focus on the events calendar as the primary interaction for members seeking events to attend. Not only did we greatly improve the visual experience, we offered filters that made it easy to dive in to the activity you’re interested in.

After researching several WordPress events plugins, we found one that was both functional and flexible in its visual design.

A WordPress backend opened the door for us to introduce sections that would encourage more community engagement on the site. Members can write blog posts about their adventures, ask important questions and get tips in the discussion forum, and view the event history of other members to gague their experience level.

Members were tightly integrated into the site, allowing organizers to accept registrations from a waitlist and view members’ past experience.

What success looks like

This was a passion project for Sea2Cloud with much of the work done pro-bono out of our love for the Alpine Club and the volunteers that keep it alive. When the redesigned ACC website for the Vancouver region launches in early 2020, it will provide a benchmark for the many other ACC sites across Canada. We hope it helps get people out on more adventures, armed with more information to stay safe and have fun!
